Töpffer Int’l

Töpffer Int'l is a multilingual typeface for comics shared around the world. This typeface honours and preserves the graphic language of their works in many languages, reducing the monotony of mechanical lettering not intended by the creator.

In order to offer them a harmonious tool for phylacteries in Latin, Cyrillic, Han, Kana or Greek, I imagined a typography
where all the characters are handwritten. They form a uniform whole, which retains its human marks.

The typeface contains Latin letters in capital letters. In order to ensure multiple use of the typeface in the comic strip, the typeface offers several stylistic sets, contextual variants and special characters.

This work began with an observation through the famous French comic strip "Tintin". Hergé, the creator, drew his own lettering for each of his bubbles in French.

What happens when the comic book is translated into another language such as English or Russian? Well, most of the time, publishers use standard typefaces that burn out the graphic language that the creator has built.

I wanted to create a tool for comics creators and publishers to reconcile some of their interests. I started to collect a few hundred comic book letterings that I used as references for my own tool.

I took my brush pen and drew capital letters next to each other, as lettering does. The font had to be readable at an intermediate to small size (30 to 10 pts), so I wrote my letters at a medium size.

To keep a certain coherence through my letters, even if I wanted to keep the human and soft aspect, I tried to place my letters on a square, circle or triangle module.

I imagined some features to break the monotony of an ordinary typeface: stylistic sets, contextual variants and other symbols specific to the world of comics.

To promote and present the typeface, I also designed a booklet that expresses the graphic universe of the typeface I designed.
